Animals- I don't get it

Disclaimer: I get why people love animals. I understand people loving pets and wanting them. I really do. When I complain about animals, I can't believe how far people take it.

Ok- so over Christmas break the kids and I watched Big Miracle , the movie based on true story of the 1988 rescue of some grey whales in Alaska.

I won't go into the movie - don't want to ruin it for anyone.

But, in Alaska the Eskimo people kill and eat whales.  It is what they do.  It is what they have always done.
But, this time some grey whales were stuck under ice.
All the greenpeace people were up in arms and wanted to save the whales.

My point in all this is not to recap the movie, but to get to one point.

Someone, a wealthy man, stepped forward and donated over 2 million dollars to save these whales!

Whales that could of fed the people of Alaska.

And 2 million dollars?

Here is my point and always my point about animals.-

There are kids starving in our own country and we use 2 million dollars for whales?????

Every time I see a dog wearing a designer jacket or pet owners that can barely feed their kids and have to buy pet food, I think of  kids.

There are so many kids that need homes or food or someone to love them.

Why are we spending money on specialty dogs or crazy things for pets?
It just doesn't add up to me.

And yes, my home is pet-free.  I just have all I can do to take care of the people under my roof without having to take care of a furry critter.
And again, I get that a lot of people enjoy the companionship of animals and like having pets.  That makes sense.
But, 2 million dollars on whales?

What do you think about animals?
I would like to know.

  1. It's all in those priorities! I'll admit, the movie had me going, rooting for those blubbery whales and crying when... that one thing...happened. ):

But you're right. When we value whales over the starving little ones? It's a sad day.

  2. We love the movie, have watched it several times. It definitely tugs at the heartstrings. But I TOTALLY get what you're saying. Every time I hear about millions being spent on "stuff" it's hard to comprehend how we still have starving kids here. Maybe now I need to stop buying useless coats for Rocky and donate to a food bank. ;-)
