What I Love Wednesday (WILW)

My favorite Christmas card! I received this card by hand from my girlfriend before Thanksgiving. Even though we haven't received a lot of cards yet, I can say hands down, this one is my favorite!

What about you?
Have you received any great cards or given any over the years?

Nutrisystem- Maintaining (again)

Are you tired of hearing my weekly posts?
I am a little.
Lost a pound, maintaining, lost a pound, maintaining, lost a pound....

It is frustrating, but it is better than not doing anything.
Not doing anything about my health, my energy, my weight...

So, I keep on keeping on.
I put in my order this week- that always perks me up!
After 3 months of Nutrisystem food, I know exactly what I like and now I will look forward to it coming in the mail.

I plugged my weight into a bmi (body mass index) calculator- correction a celebrity bmi calculator. Apparently, I have the same bmi as Queen Latifah- funny, not exactly what I was going for. But a wake-up call none the less.

So, dreaming I can tell you more than one pound next week and kick this weight loss thing into high gear.

Oh and this week, even though, I didn't lose anything... It was Thanksgiving people!!

Until next time...

What's Up With Prices?!?

Yeah, so that's me above.
Minus the skirt- I am totally one of those mom's who wears sweat outfits and probably shouldn't.
I heard Tim Gunn (style guide and from the show, Project Runway) say that women shouldn't wear sweat outfits unless going to gym.
Alas, I have failed the style code again.
But I digress...

Have you seen the price of food?
I remember paying so much less for so much more.
So, next week, I would like to see what you are paying for food.
Next Monday, a week from today, I will post the cost of:
  • a gallon of regular gas
  • a gallon of milk
  • a box of 4 sticks of butter
  • a dozen eggs
  • a loaf of bread
  • a bunch of bananas.

As most of you know, I live on Long Island, but I would love to know what you are paying for these things where you live.
I threw in the gallon of gas, because it is relevant. I used to pay 99 cents a gallon when I first started driving. It is amazing how much it has gone up in the 15 years since then. This also limits me going to cheaper places to buy food.
I often ask myself, "Is it worth going to Sams and using the gas to save $ on food?"

And if you live on Long Island too- great - I want to see what you are paying- maybe you shop at a better store than I do?

I will post my findings next week, and you can leave yours in the comment section so we can compare.

Friday Follow With The Chatty Mommy...

So, how is your day going?
My thanksgiving was great- we won't even discuss how much I like turkey and cranberry sauce in a can.
I am so not going black Friday shopping this year.
Just. not. doing. it.
Although, I did hit the gym this morning. She told us to eat "clean" for the next three days to counteract what we ate yesterday- ugh.
I have a ton of other things to do- raking for one. We are starting to be the only house on the block with a ton of leaves still on our front lawn.

A big Happy Birthday to my BFF- you know who you are! I would so buy us matching BFF necklaces if we were a little younger! You are the best!

I have a lot of ideas for the blog and will be speaking about them this week, so stay tuned.

On to the follow:

1. You must follow TCM.

2. Link your blog with the linky.

3. Put the Friday follow button (it can be found down in my sidebar) somewhere in your post.

Give Thanks

This is my favorite song from the old songs we sang at church while I was growing up. We don't sing it that often anymore, and somehow we sang it 2 times this week.

So much to be thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wednesday Hodgepodge

I decided to take Theresa's lead and link up with Joyce for Wednesday's Hodgepodge.

1. Let's start with something controversial...dressing or stuffing? What's it called in your house and what's included in your recipe? cornbread? oysters? sausage? chestnuts?

We call it stuffing and you are gonna find this funny, but I am a Stovetop girl. I really like box stuffing and that is just how my mother-in-law makes it.
However, if we go to my family's house, my aunts make 2 kinds- one with sausage (swoon) and one with apples that is also tasty.

2. Who do you sometimes compare yourself to?

Oh, that's a tough question.
I guess my mom mostly. She is and has been an amazing mom, so her opinion really matters to me- maybe even too much sometimes. I also compare myself to friends who are at the same stage in life- ya know, moms, wives, mothers of little ones, mothers of tweens (ugh). I am slowly starting to grow out of this although it is a process- trying to not care what others think about something I do or trying to make decisions by myself or with the Lord's help instead of calling my bff to make decisions for me.
I always think of that saying, "Before you go to the phone, go to the throne". Funny, but true!

3. When was the last time you were in an airport?

Last week to go to Florida for my grandfather's funeral. As sad as his passing was, I have to say, Jetblue rocks! I could watch TV on the airplane- love it!

4. What is the one dish that must absolutely be included in a turkey dinner?

Everything! My favorites are the jellied cranberry sauce that comes out looking like the can and the pillsbury grands biscuits my mil makes- yum!

5. What Christmas song do you dread hearing?

I heard it last night (and hear it every year)- I don't know the name - something about a man meeting up with his old love at the grocery store and they grab a six pack of beer and drink it in the car and talk and the snow is falling- I am thinking we can take it off the playlist for Christmas if anyone from a radio station is reading this- it is kind of a weird song.

6. If someone approaches you and asks for money do you give it to them? Do you drop money in a 'tin cup' that belongs to a person on the street? Do you have a specific charity you support at the holidays and/or year round?

This doesn't really happen to me all that often. Probably no, because I really don't carry any cash on me and I get nervous. I try to give to people collecting food for food banks outside of the grocery store and I give to Salvation Army. The little guy wanted to give, but I had no cash and no change- so I gave him 4 pennies thinking he would dumb them in- Imagine my surprise when he had to put the pennies in one at a time with the bell ringer watching. She probably thought I was so cheap (there I go again worrying what people think- wink).
Maybe soon the Salvation Army people will stand with a credit card swipe machine and we can all just swipe our cards as we go by- sad but true.

7. Share a favorite Thanksgiving memory.

I was telling my son, my mom always bought mixed nuts and put them out with the nutcracker and we would eat nuts before dinner- I don't know why.
Oh and she made pearled onions- yuck!
But my brother and I loved when the family would come- it is hard how as we grow everyone goes somewhere else or has moved.
Kind of makes you realize things will never be the same again- which is good and sad at the same time.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Please pray for my family this Thanksgiving and Christmas. I feel terrible for my grandmother who just lost her husband of 63 years and for my mother-in-law who lost her son that died too young. Loss is so hard and this is really my first time experiencing it with people so dear to me.

Nutrisystem- 1 LB. this Week and Tools on the Site

Another pound baby!
Maybe it would of been better had I not had "snack" on Sunday night.
I told you Monday morning weigh-ins are hard!
I finally logged in to the Nutrisystem site and love all their tips.
Everything you need is right at your fingertips.
My bmi is automatically calculated every time I update my weight.
This is good, but scary at the same time.
If I don't take control of my weight now, I can be in some serious trouble as I get older.
And another thing?

It just gets harder to drop weight as we get older.
As much as I consider myself young, the husband is here to remind me that we aren't.
Wink, wink.

I was sent some tips from Nutrisystem to combat the holiday binging this week.
My favorite 2?

1. Quality not Quantity. If you do plan to indulge in some of the traditional Thanksgiving favorites, use these portions as a guideline:

Turkey—3 oz. white meat, no skin (about the size of a deck of cards)
Mashed potatoes—1/3 cup (about the size of half of a baseball)
Gravy—1 Tbsp. (just drizzle it)
Relish made with sugar—1 Tbsp.
Stuffing—2 Tbsp.
Dinner Roll—if not homemade, skip it
Pie—1/12 of a 9” pie

2. Stay on track. Holidays are not the time to skip meals in an attempt to “bank” calories. That’s a strategy that can backfire miserably. Instead, eat everything on your meal plan leading up to the holiday event, and make sure you’re drinking all your water. You’ll be less likely to overindulge at the big event.

Though, I am not sure about the dinner roll thing! My mother-in-law is making those Grands biscuits and they are my favorite!

Check back on Monday to see how I do.
Until then...

Monday Morning

Is it really Thanksgiving week?
Feeling a little overwhelmed this morning!
So much to do:

Laundry seems to be at an all time high! Definitely need to give an in-service on what is actually clean and what needs to be cleaned.

Need to get rolling on writing out Christmas cards. Sam's club was definitely the cheapest this year. Sorry shutterfly, just speaking the truth.

The eldest is back from a youth retreat. She had a great time, but with her she brings more laundry. I know, I know, tell her to do it.

(I am the worst delegator)

Need to get to food shopping- have no more ideas for dinner- does that mean take-out? Yeah, ummm, no!

Really need to peg down what I am getting the kids for Christmas! It is one of those years when I could get them anything and they would be thrilled because they love everything. This is one of those years where I could also spend too much, so I really need to make a list and check it twice.

Saturday, we hit the gym and all 3 younger ones went to the play area- sorry to the lady who had to watch them. They were excited to see where the little guy goes during the week while I take classes. Then we took out 36 items from the library on top of the 20 items we already have out- I am an all or nothing type of gal. Can't even calculate what that overdo bill will cost me. (or rather cost the husband. tee hee hee)

We got a belt for my son and shoes, got brakes for the van (yikes) and ate leftovers.
It was a busy day.

And my sweet girl got bangs and a bob. She is pretty happy:

Oh yeah, the boys got Thanksgiving haircuts. This little guy does not seem to fall asleep unless he is snuggling up near one of us. And hey, why not?

Princess Birthday

My sweet little girl had her friend birthday party the other day and it was a lot of fun.

So what if I stayed up all night and tried to make everything nice. And if once again, I wore no make-up and my hair back in a wet bun because there was no time for me to get ready.
She had a great day and one day I will help her do it for her little girl.

The girls "dined" on chicken nuggets, homemade mac and cheese and mini- tacos!

We asked in the invitations if they would all dress up "girly" or like princesses. And if they didn't have anything they could use some of the birthday girl's dress-up!
Even my eldest squeezed herself into a toddler snow white outfit. My cousin came with a great attitude and was pocohontas. A japanese princess with her beautiful kimono was there as well.

We even had a Cruella DaVille. She was a hit!

We did one of those "guess how many candy corn and take it home" games.
There was 528! I didn't let my girls guess- candy corn and their teeth doesn't mix. Or rather candy corn and my late night snacking doesn't mix!

I dipped berry oreos in melted in frosting and dipped in different sprinkles- the girls gobbled them up! I got this idea from the pleated poppy.

And my attempt at a "pocketbook" cake. Hey, I tried. wink.

Cake, cookies, candy from the pinata, milk and juice! Sorry moms!

Oh, and out favors with popcorn, red and pink candy corn and a pretty star wand that I completely forgot to give to half the guests! Isn't it always the way?

I think I can officially call the party a success!

Friday Follow With The Chatty Mommy...

I'm back. I flew to Florida on Sunday night and came back late Tuesday night.
I left out of JFK which is about an hour away from me on Long Island.
I flew Jetblue for the first time. Love that airline! I watched TV the whole way home!
My trip was harder than I thought.
I know my grandfather was old, but I still can't believe he is gone.
And my grandmother.
I feel so bad for her.
Imagine the person you are married to for 63 years dies?
I can't fathom what she must feel like.

I came home to the sign pictured above and a little guy who didn't get to see me before he went to bed ran into my room at 4:30 am saying, "Momma!" he snuggled into my side and fell asleep.
I am a blessed woman.
And even though the weather is beautiful in Florida and my grieving family is there and I wish I could be there to help,
I am so happy to be home.

Don't forget to enter this great giveaway!

Shutterfly Christmas Cards

Love Shutterfly!
They have the best Christmas Cards!
How about this cute JOY one?

This is the picture we used for our Christmas card last year.

We used the picture with this card below. Very simple. It was basically just the picture with the Merry Christmas at the bottom and our names on the bottom.

I am kind of loving this one for this year. But, I have a couple ideas I am spinning around in my mind. You just might have to be surprised.

They also have the best Christmas invitations and photo gifts. I think photo gifts might be the way to go this year. I mean a mug is so much cheaper than a giftcard. And what relative can deny a gift with a cute picture of the kids on it?

P.S.- If you are one of said relatives, please forget reading this post and act surprised, mkay? Do it for the kids. wink.

Nutrisystem- Slowly moving past the 10 LB. Mark

Lost another pound!
Woo Hoo!
That is 11 pounds total and counting!

I think I am finally starting to not want carbs.
I really do not crave snacks as much.
I love the Nutrisystem harvest bar- it is really filling.

It is a little scary to think about keeping the weight off let alone trying to lose more, especially when the holidays are here.
My plan?

(Yes, I have a plan)

I am going to stick to Nutrisystem as closely as I can, so that when different "special" meals come up, I can splurge a little.

Cookie baking will be especially hard.

I am not quite sure a vegetable platter close at hand will work, but hey, it's worth a try.

Until then...

My abuelo (grandpa) passed away on Thursday. He was getting older, but I still was surprised to hear the news. He was always so kind to me.
When I was younger he would put me in his buick skylark and we would go to the mall of all places. But, he would drive 35 miles per hour in a 55 zone. I would always fall asleep. When we got there he would let me pick out whatever toy I wanted.
I could never decide- now I could (wink)- but it was so overwhelming as a kid. I picked astronaut barbie one time- she was pretty cool.
My abuelo wore those newsboy caps for as long as I have known him.
And he wore white tank tops all. the. time.
One time, my brother and I brought those zap-it guns to his house.
They shot ink that was a color at first and then disappeared.
We shot one of his tanks and he was all upset, not believing it would disappear.
He laughed when it did.
As I got older, he and my abuela moved to Florida. Can't say I blamed them, but I missed them alot.
I visited sometimes and sometimes they came here.
These pictures were taken a couple of years ago when we took the kids to Florida for the first time.
We were hoping to go again this year.
Now I will go for his funeral.
I'm so sad.
