Sledding 101

We finally left the comfort of our own yard and went sledding! Our neighbor knew of a place that was pretty unknown with a massive hill. It was sadly our kids' first time ever! We usually make a hill in our front yard and sled off that or cover our sled on the swingset and slide down that. But this year we ventured out! The kids loved it and we (us and the other 2 families that went) all promised not to share the special spot and are off to buy some more sleds and plan our next trip! Maybe next year a possible ski trip?

Stop the Sadness

I have been reading a lot of posts from women who are sad, down and some even use the word, depressed. Thankfully, at the end of the posts most of the ladies seem fine, or upbeat and ready to lean on the Lord.
But I want to know why. Because I feel the same way....
I think I get that lack of sun thing, deprivation of vitamin D. So in the fall, I tell myself it won't happen, I think positive. Christmas is great and then January is not that bad, then boom- I'm hit! Living in the Northeast kills me. Stuck in the house and this year- too much snow.
The kids get sick- double whammy.
They take forever spreading it to each other and recovering no matter how much I change their toothbrushes and keep away sugar and feed them healthy foods. Now I am bummed.
Then we miss church- inside again.
Too dark and cold to be out much!
And all my well-meaning friends who say "Wow- your kids get sick a lot!" lol
I have to constantly talk to myself- get through and remind myself, "God is bigger than this". And really I do not have much to complain about. I have a husband who is healthy and works hard for us and loves me and kids who get sick sometimes, but are basically healthy and are too cute and we love them. Focus - focus - I tell myself.
Tonight, I started something new- singing! I sing to the Lord and the strength comes up and fills me. God is good.
What is the point of this post?--------- I feel ya sisters and I know what you are going through- and thanks for sharing and know that I read your posts and pray for you. But thank you for letting me know that you are going through the same things. It helps.
And spring is around the corner! Hallelujah!

Let The Weight Loss Begin!

I have been putting off this post for awhile!
It is time to start back up!
I need to drop this weight. I have never lost all the weight after each of my pregnancies. Now is the time.
I am going to cut back on goodies at night, eat healthier in the day and add exercise.
I have both Leslie Sansone Walk fit and Beachbody Power 90. I just need to commit to it.
That last dvd sounds like I am going to wear a bikini- so never going to happen, but I would love to wear a nice tankini where the top covers the top of the bottoms in a SINGLE DIGIT size. Wouldn't that be nice?
Definitely an attainable goal. I am going to lose 35 pounds, no matter how long it takes! There is a little ticker at the end of my blog, so you can check progress.
Please pray for me.

Coming Up Tomorrow..... Why are so many of us blue this winter?

How Great is Our God

I got to go to church today!!!!! Me and the kids packed into the van and went to Sunday School and service! What a treat! It has been so long since we have went all together! And it was a great service. We sang the following song and I just had to write down the lyrics - they are so true!

Name above all names
Worthy of all praise
My heart will sing
how great is our God
Name above all names
you are worthy of all praise
and my heart will sing
how great is our God

How great is our God,
Sing with me
How great is our God,
and all will see
How great,
How great is our God
How great is our God,
Sing with me
How great is our God,
and all will see
How great,
How great is our God

Written by: Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves, and Ed Cash.

I love this song and it always reminds me of what is most important! Have a great day!

Why I Am Anti- FACEBOOK

So here's the deal- I do not have a problem if you have facebook. It is your choice. But here is why I do not have facebook:

1. The husband and I graduated with a class of 600. If I were to go on and join, all those people would be "friending" me. I know, I know- everyone tells me I can ignore them- but if I did that those people who I might bump into (and we do bump into a lot of people because we still live in the town we grew up in), they might question the cold shoulder and brush off.

2. I feel that if me and the husband were to get facebook accounts, it could pose a problem to our marriage. I have seen a lot of wives talking to guys from high school and a lot of husbands talking to girls. Maybe it is all harmless, but I have never been real big on having friends of the opposite sex within the confines of marriage. The husband is not a jealous type, but mainly because he has no reason to be and I would like to keep it that way.

3. I can sometimes get addicted to things that take me away from things that I need to attend to - such as housecleaning, cooking, organizing, etc. I am one of those people who will sit down at the computer and not realize I sat for 3 hours - I need to limit myself and I do not think being on facebook would be a positive thing for me.

4. I find most people that I want to be in contact with on a regular basis, I already am through old fashioned methods such as church, the kids school or the telephone. And even email - not so old fashioned. If on facebook, I would really just be lurking for gossipy dirt on people and some pictures on people that have gained more weight than I after having kids- not healthy, but sadly true.

5. My major problem with Facebook- PEOPLE keep your kids off of it or if you are so inclined to let them on- follow what they are doing. Our whole church has become members of facebook and I have signed on under a friend's password and saw 12 year old girls on there. Ok - so their parents are ok with it. But as I looked at their friends- I saw not only their peers from youth group, but men from our church. Single men, married men, fathers of their friends, friends of their fathers. Why? Because once you list your church affliation, people feel the need to befriend all the people from church. Do you want your daughter talking to men? If we would not let our daughters pick up the phone to call a man or for some of us, we would not allow them to call a male peer- isn't facebook the same thing? Making contact with people we have not said ok to.
Many Christian parents are saying - I control this because it is in my house- but do you?
I saw one young man with a bunch of friends from his high school. One picture of one of his friends, was 2 girls with very low cut shirts on. That picture as we well know can be changed everyday or every hour, whenever the girl wants to. So if the parents of this young man sign on and see the pic one day, it can be very different the next day. Should a young man be staring at such a pic? Don't we go through great lengths to keep our kids away from such pics?

I'll be honest though- It is very hard when the pastor is saying - check out facebook later and you can see the pics from VBS or the church picnic and I do not have an account. Or how about friends getting pregnant and announcing it on facebook, newborn baby pics, or hospital updates from a sickly church member. I have thought of possibly getting a joint account with the husband (the only way I would ever sign up), but then think what about the kids? Will they want an account too when they reach a certain age? I need to be a role model for them as well.

Just something for you to think about from thechattymommy....

P.S.- I hate facebook!

Money- Do I Have a Clue?

Dave Ramsey (well known financial planner and Christian) talks about saving and clearing up debt and finally being able to bless others.

I loved his book, Total Money Makeover, and have tried to implement some of his plans (hard to do when me and the husband don't always see eye to eye on budget issues), but what am I really doing and why?

I saw a patent leather red hobo bag on TV today and thought, "I want that- I will get it soon".

Why?
Do I need it?
NOOOOOO
But is sure was purty.- (said with a southern drawl or like one of the Clampitts)

Say, I was able to clean up my credit, lived on a tight budget and really only bought anything out of necessity- shopped at the thrifts and realized the girls do not need as much clothing as they own.

After, when the smoke cleared would I continue living that way? Or would I revert back to shopping for red hobo bags that I do not need. Patent leather ones at that.

I would like to think I would never get another credit card, but would I spend any money we did have in the name of "I deserve it, I work hard and never splurge" or some such delusional justification?

Yes, I need to pay off the credit and limit spending wherever possible, but I need to change my mindset and like anything else, focus on Him.

There is a couple at church whom I have heard have taken a vow a long time ago to only buy from secondhand stores. All their clothes, belongings, furnishings. I thought it a little odd, but now - amazing and worthy of imitation.

I need to think on this and pray about it and will come back to you with a list of things I will implement to change things. It is time to clean up shop!

UP NEXT...... WHAT I REALLY THINK OF FACEBOOK AND WHY I DO NOT HAVE AN ACCOUNT.

Party in Sick Bay

Well, it was the little boy's 2nd birthday this past weekend and instead of having a small party with the grandparents on Sunday, we opted to cancel and save everyone the wonderful chance of contracting the stomach virus. Aren't we nice people? So, on his real birthday, we decorated, gave him his big present (hand-me-down gift from friend at church wrapped in big brother's sheet) and even had cake. We had vanilla cake with whipped topping and fresh berries. The little boy was over the moon and thought just the five of us singing to him was the best.
After that, I made the decision to not have a make-up party this coming weekend. As far as the little boy was concerned he already had his party. If that would of been one of the older kids, we would of heard, "when will we have my party, when will we have my party?...."

I love when they are young. But so sad that our youngest is 2. Not sad enough to have more though.
Not yet.....

Hello MckMama- please visit!

So.... If I could have a phone conversation with someone high up over at Blog Frog- it would go something like this:

Hello Blog Frog. I really like your widget and have it on my site. I was even recently thinking of paying the money and asking you to promote me on other blogs, but then I had a better idea- Why not just pay MckMama (Uber Mommy Blogger) to visit my blog? If she would just visit me on my blog once a day- that would make me look good. And maybe for an added fee- she could even hit my follow button. Maybe for even more money she could put my button (that I don't have) on her site or wow!!! - imagine she left a comment on one of my posts.
And then for a real lot of money (that I don't have) she could blog about me or give me a blog award.

...At this point the executive might just laugh or be disgusted with me. Then he would hang up and say to his partner, "By George- I think she is on to something!"

But really, don't ya think it would work?
MckMama is huge in the blog world. To have any connection to her is more promotion than Blog Frog could ever offer.
Another idea- my fellow blogger said to me - Could MckMama disable her blog frog and then visit us and we do not even know?
I am hopeful.
Anyone got any better ideas?
Well off I go- to shamelessly leave a comment to MckMama about my post.
Maybe she'll have pity.
See what happens when I am in the house too long.
I am going to the mailbox- maybe something besides the overdue electric bill will be there.

Sick Bay

That's the name my Vietnam Veteran FIL calls my house when people are sick.
Well, the youngest I thought was having a problem with his antibiotic (I know - I know- why did I bother to give it to him and will I ever learn?) so his belly was unsettled and I was changing some gross diapers- poor little baby. But, then last night, the husband came home early from his friend's house (a sure sign something is wrong) and said he did not feel well. So we stayed up all night while he got sick. Thank God I never catch the stomach virus, but now I am left watching the other 3 kids to see if they are going to get it. I pray they don't. Then I had the decision of letting my healthy kids finally go to church with my mother (I was so excited thinking I might get to go today) or if I should keep them home and wait for them to get sick. I opted to let them go- they show no signs of being sick and I figure I can't keep them in the house and wait for them to get something. What would you have done?
Oh yeah- pray for us. :)

You have to check it out!

Long Island Blizzard 2010

Long Island is beautiful, but cold this time of year. We have received so much snow this year. I am trying to enjoy the beauty of the whiteness, but I want to sell my house and run screaming down south! The kids love to play in it, but that equals about 2 loads of wet clothing every time they go out. I try not to be a downer, but it is all about logistics baby! And 2 more loads of wash takes time away from other things. Please let me know when spring will be starting! Who trusts that silly groundhog anyway? Oh yeah- I am well aware that the kid needs a haircut- don't ya think?

Fresh Beat Band Smoothies

I am not much of a music person, but when the kids are watching Nick Jr. and the Fresh Beat Band comes on, I just love their music. lol
Well, the kids have been begging to make the Fresh Beat Band Smoothies. We even printed out the little straw toppers too. We used vanilla yogurt, a splash of orange juice, a ripe banana and frozen mixed berries. It was a little tart in my opinion- I think something to do with the berries being frozen and so pitty. It might of worked better with fresh berries. But at least the kids ate it and it was a healthier snack. I think they weren't crazy about it, but so happy about the straw toppers. It reminded me how easy it is to do something that makes their day. As soon as my oldest daughter came home they had to tell her all about it and same thing when my husband came home!

Good Things

A couple of good things from this dreary winter:

1. My daughter found my memory stick from my camera under the heater in the bathroom! I had shared how I had lost it here.
2. Even though I kept the girls home from school we have all of their school work for the week and are doing a mock home school - this has been fun, but easier than real home school because their lessons have already been taught in school and I am just overseeing. With the exception of my son who is 4 and I need to keep teaching him the letters. Bit by bit.
3. We are getting a snowstorm tomorrow and it doesn't matter because I was planning on being inside anyway.
4. Someone gave me a big boy construction toy that had never been used, that I can pass along to my son for his birthday next week.
5. My son is too young to realize I recycled his gift.
6. Tax money should be in any day now.
7. I love my life.

I watched "American Idol" the other night with my husband and one of the contestants was saying she grew up thinking no one ate dinner just like her and she looked forward to the next day, knowing she could eat lunch at school and even then she would save half that lunch for her little brother who was home and hungry and did not go to school. I think about this everyday and then think, "Gosh, we are so blessed"!
Enjoy your day today!

SICK!

Well, the kids are still under the weather and we are missing church today which I really do not like to do! It is so unlike us and my son keeps saying, "When are we going to church, Mom?" I am seriously considering keeping the 2 that are in school, home for the next week straight into the vacation week, so they have 2 full weeks home to recover and build up their immune systems and maybe they can stop catching the same cough and bringing it home. This is when homeschooling appeals more and more. Do you think the Lord is trying to tell me something? I'll save that for another post though. As for now- I miss church- I miss teaching the 5th and 6th grade Sunday school class and I need to come up with some kind of a devotion for me and the kids while we are home today. Enjoy church all you healthy people!

TAX TIME

WOO HOO!
We made it! I know I haven't blogged in awhile. Christmas was great - yadda yadda - yackety smackety. And now we are in the throws of winter. IT is cold. The kids are all sick and could use some vitamin D, but it is even too cold to go outside. Yuck- so today is pajama day and we are loving it. Sort of. I am a self-proclaimed homebody- I could defintely stay home for weeks without going out- except for church of course! And everytime, we have to leave to go food shopping or school or anywhere else, the kids are crying they want to stay home in their jammies and do nothing. Well, they have that opportunity today because they are sick, and all they have been doing is fighting. Just figures! lol
Which brings me to my silver lining- it is tax time! The list of things to buy with our refund is growing! What to do? What to do? Well, we need a new bathroom, a fence, kitchen supplies that have depleted over the years. Try making about 12 dozen Christmas cookies with one old cookie sheet and no cooling racks- not fun!
I am trying to write everything on the list and check it over, before any splurge spending. And do not forget the husband wanting to buy a flat screen for the living room that also needs to be redone. He is the money-maker- what can I say?
So we will do what we can and the others will end up on next years' tax list. I'll let you know how it goes.
